Luapula landscape restoration programme

funded by Commonland Foundation
First Phase – Luapula landscape sensing project, August 2024 – February 2025

The project is a sensing exercise to understand the landscape using the 4 Returns framework. It will create a platform for stakeholders to discuss the state of degradation and envision restoration for the landscape. The goal of this 12-month project is threefold:

Use existing platforms to bring stakeholders together, conduct a stakeholder engagement process, understand landscape boundaries, current players, landscape status, and begin to define landscape vision using the 4 Returns framework.

Carry out a carbon scan to assess the feasibility of a carbon project in Community Forest Management Areas (CFMAs) and help adjacent communities apply for CFMA recognition.


Second Phase - Landscape Plan, May - September 2025

The project focuses on facilitating  participatory sessions in the landscape for stakeholders  to prioritize focus areas. Stakeholders will discuss and  explore various ideas to help design new  interventions, redefine the three zones in the landscape, draft a landscape vision, and create a landscape plan.

Conducting stakeholder alignment, which involves mapping additional stakeholders and holding a workshop to make decisions on the stakeholder platform and governance. Developing a 4 Return Landscape Proposition, building on first phase and finalized 3 zones map

Conducting a feasibility study for a Forest Restoration and Protection Project and carrying out a Landscape Finance Assessment to explore financial aspects of the landscape.

Climate Smart, Ecosystem enhancing and knowledge-based Rural Expertise and Training Centres (a consortium of organizations from Europe and Africa

Funded By The European Union, October 2022 – September 2027

The objective of the RURALITIES is to implement a whole ecosystem-based, knowledge-based a social sciences and humanities, overarching methodology to deliver a multi-points learning framework which enable the effective capacity building of communities in rural areas towards ensuring the sustainable, balanced and inclusive development of simplified socio- ecological systems (SIMSES).

It will simultaneously contribute to raise rural communities’ awareness on the variety of source-points driving climate change challenges and the related pathways to overcome or mitigate them.

The project addresses the inadequate policy framework to support science and innovation, economy financing for rural development and incapacity of local CSOs, CBOs and farmer groups to undertake research innovation and policies that support their livelihoods.

Enhanced Accountability and Transparency in Utilization of Public Resources (EATUPRP)

Funded By GIZ, August 2022 – July 2023

The project sought to capacitate six CSOs in Mansa and Nchelenge districts to provide oversight on the utilization of public resources in the education sector. The Overall objective of the project was ‘’to contribute to sustainable and inclusive development in Luapula Province through effective and transparent management of public resources.

The specific objective was ‘’to empower local CSOs, in Mansa and Nchelenge districts to document and report cases of unaccountable use of public resources in the education sector.

Results

Six beneficiary CSOs have demonstrated increased capacity to carry out outreach activities and are able to facilitate community engagement with duty bearers to hold them accountable for service delivery in their respective schools.

Improved Efficient Cook Stove project

Funded By C- Quest Capital LLC, 2019- 2023

The project was being implemented under a Clean Development Mechanism (“CDM”) Programme of Activities (“PoA”) for distribution and use of clean efficient cook stoves. The project was implemented in Mansa, Chembe, Chiengi, Samfya, Chifunabuli, Lunga, Nchelenge, Chiengi, Chipili and Kawambwa districts.

The overall objective of the project was to contribute towards the reduction of deforestation and carbon emissions.

Results

Over 18,000 rural households received improved cook stoves.

Community Action for Climate Change

Funded By Government of Scotland and VSO, October 2018 to September 2020

The project worked with the most climate vulnerable communities in Mansa district to promote knowledge of and access to Climate Smart Agricultural (CSA) practices and improved forestry management targeting women, youths, and people with disabilities. The project was implemented in Chief Mibenge and Kalasa Lukangaba respectively.

Results

75% of beneficiary farmers have increased agricultural production by adopting environmentally sustainable practices such as use compost manure. Eighty percent (80%) of beneficiary farmers have been empowered with knowledge and skills in the use of treadle pumps for irrigation, which have enhanced their agriculture production and are no longer depending on rain-fed agriculture.

Results

The project has helped beneficiary farmers diversify their production by providing alternative sources of livelihood such as horticulture, bee keeping and tree planting.
