What We Do

— Land Tenure Security

Advocates for improved land rights and security of tenure for vulnerable groups (especially women and small-scale farmers). Works to harmonize customary and statutory land administration systems.

— Environmental Stewardship & Natural Resource Management

Promotes forest restoration, conservation, afforestation, and sustainable land use. Facilitates Community Forest Management and climate-smart agriculture.

— Livelihood and Economic Development

Supports climate-resilient agriculture, income-generating activities (e.g., beekeeping, horticulture), and savings groups. 

04.

— Governance, Advocacy, and Policy Engagement

Empowers communities to engage with government and traditional leaders. Implements civic education and transparency projects to improve accountability in public service delivery.

05.

— Climate Change Adaptation

MDLA supports communities in adopting climate-smart agriculture, water conservation methods, and alternative livelihoods to reduce dependence on climate-sensitive practices like rain-fed farming.

06.

— Gender Equality in Land and Resource Access

A major focus is on ensuring women’s land rights, increasing their involvement in land administration, and advocating for the harmonization of gender-sensitive policies across both customary and statutory systems.

Impact Stories

On Agricultural Impact (Community Action for Climate Change, 2018–2020):

75% of beneficiary farmers increased production by adopting sustainable practices such as compost use. 80% now use treadle pumps, reducing dependency on rain-fed agriculture

On Community Empowerment (Women Land Rights Project, 2011–2012)

Project

Climate Smart, Ecosystem enhancing and knowledge-based Rural Expertise and Training Centres (a consortium of organizations from Europe and Africa

Funded By The European Union, October 2022 – September 2027

The objective of the RURALITIES is to implement a whole ecosystem-based, knowledge-based a social sciences and humanities, overarching methodology to deliver a multi-points learning framework which enable the effective capacity building of communities in rural areas towards ensuring the sustainable, balanced and inclusive development of simplified socio- ecological systems (SIMSES).

It will simultaneously contribute to raise rural communities’ awareness on the variety of source-points driving climate change challenges and the related pathways to overcome or mitigate them.

The project addresses the inadequate policy framework to support science and innovation, economy financing for rural development and incapacity of local CSOs, CBOs and farmer groups to undertake research innovation and policies that support their livelihoods.
